I finally found our first martins today in the bridge colonies in Sacramento - an adult male and a presumed (unconfirmed) adult female. We have been checking most colonies briefly every 1-2 days for the last 3 weeks. This arrival date is later that previous first scout dates of March 8-15 over the last 3 years.

Presumably, the delay this year was due to below normal temperatures that we have experienced nearly every day since the first of March. Today temperatures were 66 F, about 6 degrees warmer than any other highs we have had this month. The season begins!
