A foot of snow so far

We've got a foot so far with another 6-10 expected tonight. Sure am glad the martins are not back yet.

Nesto,
Wow! I bet they are glad they are not back, too!
6 to 10 more inches? If you get that overnight, send us another pic tomorrow. Snow is a concept that most of us in the deep south can't quite get a handle on. It would be neat to see the difference a day makes!

I'm also very glad that the martins aren't here yet....we've had at least 15 inches of snow in the past two days but am EXTREMELY grateful for the moisture!

They say we got 14" total here in Lincoln but the snow is finally tapering off. I see someone in Ashland, NE reported martins at their site. That is only 25 miles or so to the east of me. I only had 3-pair last year but fledged 14 I think it was. Hopefully mine are taking their sweet time getting up here.
Maybe they hung around Cancun for the spring break parties.

Here is is the first day of spring, I have 5 martins, and at least 5" of snow. Here it is, the first day of spring waiting for martins and already 5" of snow! Yuck.
Horrible, horrible, horrible........They'll be dead for sure by Wednesday. I've never seen this happen before. It's just depressing. Second consecutive year and I have to see more martins die. Tree swallows already appear to be dead. Either that or they've been holed up someplace for the last several days. I'm expecting bluebirds and killdeer to "kick the bucket" next. Poor killdeer are all clustered along the roads, some getting hit.
I bought 5 dozen crickets and about as many mealworms yesterday but the martins just sat there and watched my vain efforts. If they're sitting outside after work today I'll try again. That's all I can do though. They braved the early return and this is what happened. I knew it would turn cold again, but never expected this dispicable snow. I hope April is wet and steamy jungle hot. I've been ready for summer again since last September. Forcast is low-mid 40s till Monday. If those martins somehow manage to survive I'll kiss the tail feathers of the next sparrow I catch.

Glen,
I saw my first Killdeer of the year yesterday. It was in the middle of the road dodging cars. I remember a post about killdeer arriving shortly before the martins. I hope the martins wait because there isn't a flying insect to be had around here.

We only got 4" over here in Atlantic but it came down in a matter of hours. It was coming down and blowing really hard that night. and I had to drive home in it! It looks like it is melting fast though and warmer temperatures are in the forecast. Bring On Spring!!!

I saw my first red winged blackbird last week which told me no more bad winter weather. It worked for 30 yrs. until now. I hope we all get thru this ok.
