Don,

Nice creative use of a used dish. Are you using decoys, Dawnsong and nesting materials provided? Otherwise the site should be just fine.

Ford, You have all that and no martins, lot of money invested and time. I have a web cam and number of gourds and watersedge and me too no martins. But still trying and not giving up had them towards the end of the season hanging around for the first time. I'm hoping this is the year for me.

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

Don, that is simply beautiful, I cannot imagine that a martin would not like to stay there..Its a shame that you do not have more martins in the area...A site like that would have 20 pair down here in Texas in the first year..I wish there was a way that I could ship you some to get started, I sure would do it  Good luck this year

Don,

That is the nicest gourd rack I've ever seen! And it's recycled, too?? Your creativity is first rate. Good luck. I hope you get a whole bunch this year!

Don, do you prebuild nests for them? Do you use any mud in the nests, and on the outside of the houses? If not, you should give that a try. It realy helps pull in thoughs SY's.

Don, I think that's a great-looking setup! I'd really be surprised if you don't have martins within a year or two if you have colonies near you. I'm not sure where the closest one to you is. Best of luck. I suppose you did a lot of reading on here and in the archives, etc. to get tips on attracting martins, right?

Bob and Cathy,
Bob I put pine needles in my gourds and boxes,I have heard about the mud but I never tried it. Will you tell me how you use the mud
like how much you put in the nest and where, and what about the outside
of the holes? And yes to you Cathy. I have read the last 2 or 3 years
every chance I get about martins.Cathy I was at the Grand Canyon of Wellsboro PA last aug.how far from there do you live? I am 150 miles west of there.

Don, you can see how I build my mud nests on my web site under the attracting Martins page. I mix in some old dead laves and just about anything you rake up off the lawn. Smear lots around the inside walls and a bit on the porches and entrance hole. It really helps IMHO. http:www.wtc.ab.ca/northernskys/attract.htm

That's great to hear; the more you read the better.

Hmmm...it's been so long since I was there (it's beautiful there, btw, isn't it?)...I think it's about 1-1/2 hours or maybe 2 hours away from here. Do you know where Williamsport is? We're an hour southeast of there, about 10 miles west of the Susquehanna River in Snyder County. Erie is about a six-hour drive from here. I guess that means you and I live fairly far away from each other, huh?
