Hi All,
I was looking at my SG's this morning and thinking about "trimming" the part of the gourd that you can see on the porch in the middle. Has anyone tried this before? Would it let starlings in?
It looks like it would let the PMs in a little easier, as they seem to wallow side to side to get in. Checked the crescent and it's within a 1/16 of what it should be.

Chuck,
I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to as my SGs were modified to crescents. I did however open them up to 1.21" which is a little less than 1/32" oversize. That 1.21" dimension was measured using digital calipers but I found that the black Kodak film canisters are a snug fit in that entrance so that was how I set the rest of my crescent SREs. I've never had any starlings get in since doing this about 5 or 6 years ago.
IMHO, do not go a RCH over 1.22" or starlings could possibly enter.

Chuck, if you have porches, then I would not enlarge them. If you do not have porches, you may be able to enlarge them and still keep out most of the starlings...

chuck,
I put my porches flush on one set of SG's and about 1/4" below the other two. I think I may have "filed" the lower part of the crescent, just to make sure it was straight and smooth.
If you think you need to file them, I would use a small "fine" file and just do the straight part @ the bottom. Just do a little at a time, as I am sure it is a lot harder to make them "smaller" than it is bigger
Like Dale said, just don't make them to big or the starlings could possibly get in.
Good luck

I'm not looking at opening the crescent itself. The area I'm speaking of is where the porch clips on the bottom of the opening. Theres a 3/4-1" area between the "clips" of the porch ie- the middle of the porch where it clips on to the gourd. I checked my gourds and made sure the top of the crescent was at the recommendation.
