Steve, just wanted to let you know that I read most of your lengthly post about owls. I learned some valuable information, not the least of which is that I have barred owls in my area. For several years, I have heard the eerie night calls of some type of flying creatures--not realizing it was owls. The sound makes me want to go inside to the safety of my home.
I plan to try your idea of sound to distract the owls at night. I had been thinking about hanging a lot of wind chimes in the trees around my colony, but now I may also add loud music.
Your post was so long, I believe a lot of people may not have read all of it. I wish you would condense and repeat the part about playing loud music at night to fool the owls. Of course, this would work only if you have no close neighbors.

Yes, my post was long! I tried to cover many aspects of owl predation on purple martins. I may post a condensed version of the sound deterrent method. However, using sound is probably not practical in many locations unless you could use something more acceptable like "white noise". A buzzing sound that masks the male martins' nocturnal vocalizations may work while not creating irate neighbors!
