Mike,
All I can say is THAT'S JUST SUPER!!!!! It is absolutely wonderful how you have made martin conservation part of the school's studies, and introduced martins to (how many 1000 from 1997-2006???!!!) students and teachers and other school staff, plus parents.
By the way, information about John Jay's martin colony was included in an enviromental educator's newsletter and I will mail you a copy.
Mike, they are so lucky to have you - thanks for what you are doing

This is wonderful, Scully.
Ever given thought to a webcam? We could watch them with you! There are probably very good reasons why this isn't feasable, but it would be a real learning experience for those of us without the equipment or funds to do it ourselves.

Golly, typo city. Give us a couple of days and we'll iron 'em all out
Joe, just as you alluded to, at this point a live web cam broadcast would require more hard drive space, equipment and band width than we would care to deal with. I did find one on the web from up in Dallas: Harold Anderson's set-up (not yet activated this year see http://anderson.cc/nest_images.html ).
Actually our next aquisition might be a digital image recorder (about $350). Depending upon the setting, these things can record hundreds of hours of footage.
At present we just use a vcr to record on VHS tapes, eight hours at a tme.

Mike, great job on the web site.It is good to see you involving young people in takeing care of the martins. Keep up the good work. Henry
Excellent work Mike!
I must say excellent on the website too! It's great the work your doing with the students. Also, some very good information on the tolerence of martins. I wonder what they were thinking with all these humans and heavy machines around
I'm a "nestcamaholic" Is 18 hours a day a bad thing? (I have 2 this year, luckily I have 2 eyes!)
That is great Mike! I really enjoyed watching the three little videos of the babies being fed. I work for a school district and live right across the street from one of the junior highs. I think I'm going to see if I can muster up some interest in getting a colony started over there! Even though I'm pretty new at being a landlord, I could be available to help out. Would you mind if I pass the link to your web site on to some of the teachers? I would love to see more interest and education locally. I see martin houses up in our little city, but for the most part they are located too close to trees and are sparrow infested.
Keep up the good work!

Thank you all for your kind replies. All the typos were mine. First time I ever attempted a web page. It was composed using Dreamweaver Software, the photos being resized in Fireworks, both of which aren't as seamless and friendly to the novice as we have come to expect our software to be.
In addition to fixing the typos, I have LOTS of student photographs I could add, the limiting factor being how long it takes to download on slow modems. Perhaps more/longer video clips are in order too, video clips open as a separate page and take up surprisingly little memory when kept visually small and of low resolution.
Sherrie, I would be pleased if you would provide the link to other teachers. Indeed, that was really why we wrote it

Superb website and a great story about the life of the colony and the school. One thing that really amazed me was the videos. How fabulous to watch those!!!
Golly, first round of typo checks and yet more surface, sorta like zombies in a grade B movie
Dave... say, didn't you guys make them gourds on the cover sheet?
Glenn, the neat part is those two martins on the opening page are very likely the exact same two in the videos. Certainly the female on the porch is.

Mike,
Excellent web site! We live right across the road from the local high school. I too have been thinking that surely they would be interested in doing something simular. Our houses and gourd racks are in our front yard so everything we do is in plain view for all to see, (you should have seen the looks the first year we fed them by "flipping crickets" during a long cold spell), a couple of years ago I had one of the teachers hollar out,"Are you feeding them?" needless to say before the conversation was over he said "can I try it". Your web site may be just the ticket to get them excited about it for real. Great job and thanks for all you do.

Mike, just love your site and all the information and photos. Learned a lot. I just took over management of a PM house in the campground where I live year round. Need all the info I can get. Keep up the great work. TanaroseTN
