Hello Everyone,
Well, The flood gates have been opened! Let me explain!
The past two days, I had an ASY male that only showed up when I put the Dawnsong on in the mornings after he spent the night for two nights on Monday and Tuesday of last week! Then yesterday I saw 3 ASY males that showed up with one female! That was in the morning! Then My son told me he saw all four again that evening about 4:30 P.M.! But I didn't post it because of not knowing if they stayed the night! SO I woke up to an early Christmas present! I looked out to check on site to find out that there was starlings on my poles! I wiped my eyes not twice but three times and saw all martins! Wake me up!!! There was 5 ASY males and 2 ASY females flying and fighting all over the racks and to the ground they go from fighting that I had to referee out there!! HA! HA! Then later that day 2 more martins showed up! What!!! Then they stayed the night, tonight as I watched them come in! ALL of them!! 6 ASY males and 3 ASY females! WOW!!! Look out you all, Here they come! And now to all a good night!!! I'm having Happy Dreams tonight!!!!! I can't believe it!!!! Thanks John!
Somebody Wake Me Up! I'm Dreaming! Guess How Many Martins???

Congradulations, John!
I too woke up this morning to find I have an ASY pair. I think. I'm pretty sure the male is an ASY adult, but I'm not sure about the female. Not as many as you, but I'm still excited. I first put my S&K barn up last year, but I didn't get any Martins.
Here are some pictures of my Martins. Could anyone tell me if they are both adults?

Alishye, the male is definitely an ASY (After Second Year). Hard to tell about the female because I can't see her underside very well, especially the covert (the area just underneath the tail that comes to a point). If it is very very light or white, then she's probably a SY (juvenile or Second Year bird). Chances are she's an ASY because it's early in the season and SY's have just barely started coming in, even here in Florida. Don't know where you're located. For Martin identification, check the PMCA Archives. Just click on the button at the top of this page.
By the way, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! And welcome to the wonderful world of Martin Landlording!

floridasunshinegoddess,
Thank you very much for your help. I'm really new at this! I've been emailing pictures like crazy to my friends and family!
The pair in my pictures have been coming in and out all day. They keep going into the same apartment too. I'm hoping they stay!
Just a little while ago, I had three more PMs stop by. I think two of them are males and one female. Again, I'm not sure if they are ASY or SY.
I live in Houma, Louisiana. About 45 minutes south of New Orleans.

Alishye, there haven't been any reports of SYs in Louisiana yet so they probably are ASYs. I wonder if they might have been displaced by Katrina. Doesn't matter. Looks like they have a good home now.
I like the S&K Red Barn you have. And they will be safe in those crescent entrances! That's such a cool picture you posted. You can see the Silhouette on the barn of the Martin hovering.
Wishing you the best.
By the way, Alishye, take time to read as much as you can in the Archives. It will answer many of your questions. And if you have a question that you don't see an answer to, then just post it here. There are lots of experienced landlords who will be happy to help you. We were all new once and someone helped us!

Floridasunshinegoddess,
Thank you. I have a hard time trying to figuring out between ASYs and Sys. But when I'm not admiring the birds that keep arriving today, I'm reading!
Thank you too for the compliments on my S&K barn. I had few missing and broken perches, but I finally found where I put the spare perches!

Way to go folks. I'm delighted to hear you have birds. Now by gosh I would appreciate it if you inform any fly-by birds that there is a nice 'ole man, on the East side, of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. all ready with everything they seek.

Hello everybody,
Thanks for your excitement and encouragement! I will post tomorrow night when I see how many will come in for the night and check during the day too! I saw some at 4:30 P.M. flying overhead but had to take my 9 year old to his baseball practice, so I couldn't see them come tonight! But oh how I wanted to be there!!! HA! Thanks John!
Hello Alishye,
You are in the right place at the right time of getting alot of martins this year! All the damage in and around your area will have an effect on the returning martins this year! So get ready, you are going to get alot of them! Might have to put up another house or gourds! And yes, those two martins you saw are an ASY male and female! And you said you are getting more too! Excellent!!! Keep us posted! John!

John, you didn't mention calling into work. I had to call in sick Monday because I had 3 Martins staying over night. I was so excited, had to see if any more would show up. None have and the 3 that were here only stayed 3 days to then move on.
I wish my One pair from last year would show up. I think if they were here, more PMs would come.
Keep us posted on your arrivals.
Ken.

Hello Rip Or Ken!!!
How are you doing today??? Just let me warn you that you will see an explosion like I just did! That ASY male that stayed all night for two nights never came back to stay again, only to show up every morning while the Dawnsong was playing. He did this for 2-3 mornings and then all of a sudden here they all came!!! So don't get frustrated like I did , it will embarass you!!! HA! By the way, did you get alot of visitors last year? Thanks and hang on! John!

John and all....mini coastal report. I am now estimating that my colony has grown from 22 to about 28...all healthy, beautiful adults. The neighbor's houses I am monitoring have also started to look inhabited by adults....my, there may not be too much left for the subbies....they are steadily trickling in! And oh my, the battles continue!

Hello Sue,
There are alot of martins that showed up at my house this morning or they were there already before! Nine yesterday and 13 this morning! And tonight? 15 ASY martins!!! So you are right, the martins I'm getting are from other colonies that were destroyed by hurricanes! I only had three pairs from last year and now this many!!!! All ASY birds!!!! Most of them are males!!! Fierce fighting all day today!!! So, get ready there will be lots of SY martins that will be fighting for space!!! Thanks John!
