I'm beginning to wonder if the purple martin conservation needs the help ofall us lanldlords like they say they do or not. I've been an active landlord
for 13 years now and do think I know what a purple martin looks like. For
2 years in a row now I have submitted a scout report for Webb City Mo, and it came back twice saying that it is to early for this area for martins to bearriving. This afternoon on Feb 24th 2006 I saw an ASY martin flying above my housing in my yard. If you don't want my help just say so!

I bet you hit a safeguard in the software program. Call the PMCA on Monday and talk to person.
I'm excited about your sighting. I've seen Martins in southern Missouri in very early March, so it's not all that early now.

Darryl, they posted your sighting on the scout report, and also someone else from Shell Knob has been posted for MO.
Not long now for the 'Commonwealth of Kentucky" to get some martins.

Darryl,
I am sorry that the scoutform has given you difficulty two years in a row. It is not, by any means, a personal attack, I am sorry if you took it that way. Knowing that I am not the best with words, I had solicited the wording help of my coworkers to come up with the friendliest messages possible. The scoutform is a computer program that does what it is told to do. It simply lets you know that we would like a little more information from you. To justify that request, the scout form explains why, your situation is a fine example.
That message is given when a reported ASY date lies outside of a statistically expected date range. SY-M reports are tested with a similar process. The date range is calculated based on all scout data collected through the 2004 scout season (when I wrote the scout form's code). Via a statistical equation, the dates that 98% of previous scout reports fell within, for your state/province, are used to determine if a scout report is earlier or later than expected.
If you would like to learn more about the statistics behind that "State-specific Date-range Test" visit: http://www.stat.wvu.edu/SRS/Modules/Normal/normal.html
Please note that your scout dates have been accepted. Even when the scoutform concludes that your scout report as early, it is still sent to the PMCA. It is simply flagged for closer review. A human, usually myself, does review all scout reports.
Thank you for participating the Scout-arrival Study. The Scout-arrival Study is a worth while project even if it could benefit from improvements. [/list]
