They are fine as they are, there are a lot of things that some people do like:
1) add a lot of nesting material
2) add tunnels and porches
3) paint the inside a dark color
4) roughen up the floor so martins can push and walk better
5) put a pipe or tube thru the hanging holes so they don't leak water
6) put in a pvc elbow for a ventilation hole in hot climates
Some of these definitely make it easier for the martins, so it more or less depends upon what you may want to do to them. there are many different opinions on that subject
what state is Elkmont in?

If they are crescent opennings I would put porches on them. Mainly for perching for me, but people think it makes it easier for the pms to get inside. I have been told people have these crescent opennings on the super gourds and they don't have porches and the martins get in fine. And yeah what state are you from? My porches are inside and out and I also fill mine have way up with pine needles

I have used SG's for several years. Couple of recommendations: Use a combination inside/outside porch. Fill up the gourd to the level of the inside porch with pine needles. Put non skid on the porches......

Elkmont is a very small town with about 1200 people in the Northern part of Alabama.I live probably 15 to 20 miles east of Chuck Abare, well known Martin entusiast.I am also located 10 miles south of the Tennessee state line. Thanks for asking!
