We have red throated (?headed) finches that spend the winter in our yard. I have the hardest time telling them from the sparrows. Have a trap set up for the sparrows but need some aid in telling the finches apart from the sparrow. Does anyone know of a site that I can go to SEE a picture(s) of the two birds? Thank you!!

Here is a good photo collection of the House finch. The females are the hardest to tell apart. Look for the distinct stripes on the female breast of the Finch-- the female sparrow will NOT have those stripes. Hope it helps.

Sioux,
I struggle with that also! Even now the finches are showing up a little more and I can hear them well. Last year I am confident I let a few sparrows 'fly the coup' because I couldn't assure myself that what I was seeing through my scope was sparrow or finch. The websites and pictures always make it easy to discern but looking through the scope makes you(me) question everything. Those birds never seem to sit there at the perfect angle for me to identify them. I hate the thought of letting a sparrow slip by but I'd rather that than the alternative.
