- Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas
My neighbor and I both tried to make them, we tried independently, and we came up with the same results. Its hard to get them to reset, especially if you are trying to catch sparrows. We could get them to work for starlings. They have about the same results as the controller that PMCA and others sell.. Maybe other people had better luck, but we came to the conclusion that the contoller is easier to build and gives the same results..
He put his up so that a sparrow will trip it. Then to reset it, he has a nylon fishing line tied to it, he simply pulls on the line to reset. He likes the trap up high, he doesn't like to climb that high, so that is why he resets it from the ground. With 2 strings, you can reset it with one string, and close it with another when you leave home.

Bill, are you thinking of the hunter trap? I made a trap for house. with a wood
front, sides and back. a flat peace of plastic on inside of the front. Then a peace flat plastic on each side of entrance about 3'' apart, then a hole in the
bottom to fit over the end of a peace of down spout, mounted the front
on the down spout with cage at bottom. It worked until a wind storm distroyed it.
I think the hunter trap is just the 3'' pipe with the elbow and box around it.

Bill, I build a bunch of these traps - they work great for me(kept catching Ts's), I have a hard time making a controller type trap to work consistently - wood swelling on humid days.
You can see the trap at americanartifacts.com. I build mine using 3/4" plywood. Inside dimensions were 6 x6 x 20H. I made the tipping floor form .020 stainless steel (5 7/8W x 5 3/4 x 5 3/4) .
In order for the trap to work correctly you have to affix the 'weight' wire as close to the axis of the floor as possible.
