I am hoping there will be another MartinFest in Manteo this year again. Are there any plans yet?
I have just ordered SREHs from the PurpleMartin. org site, we will mount them when they come. Do they fit all houses?
I did not get a chance to discuss this at the Festival last year, I am skeptical that my Martins will be comfortable with these, will they feel ok with the door shape or will they have to learn to deal with them? I am nervous about this, I don't want to chase any of my Martins away, I am just getting started with my colony and don't want to discourage anyone.
Hope to see all at the Festival. Is the boat ride in the schedule?
Thanks,
Jayne

Hi Jayne, I also started with sreh's last year with my new supergourds. Yes you will be nervous as heck. Last year I about had a heart attack cause I would watch them and they would not beable to get in. I was so mad at myself for buying them. But asked on this forum what to do and they told me to be patient they will learn. I bet it took a week to 2 before one got in. But once 1 got in they all watched him and learned how. I do believe sreh's work very well. I watched a starling try to get in but all he did was spin his wheels trying to get in . I was laughing my head off at it. I should of not been laughing though, I should of got my bb gun. I was told maybe leave a couple entrances round if you wanted to, then after they lay there eggs change it to sreh. I would bet they would learn to use srehs just like they did at my house. What type of housing do you have? You might post that on a topic so you can be sure how to place the srehs. I have heard there are certain ways to do it depending on the type of house you have, but I am not sure what , how and all that.

Jayne, we don't know yet if there will be a roost festival at Manns Harbor Bridge again this year or not, but we will be sure to make info available here and in the Update as soon as we hear.
With martin events increasing each year, it can get confusing as to what's held where & when.
MartinFest is an annual event in Finger TN, held at Victor Stoll family farm. This year's will be MartinFest 2006. Usually held the 3rd weekend in June, guests enjoy speakers, socializing, and the 100s of birds at the Stoll colony.
The NC event, held for the first time last year, was known as the Manns Harbor Bridge Purple Martin Roost Festival. It featured speakers, and included an optional boat ride for viewing the martins coming in to roost. Will likely be held in August.
In NJ, an event held to coincide with the huge martin roost on the Maurice River in south NJ, the Cumberland County, NJ, Purple Martin Festival (usually held in August) will hopefully remain an annual event. The roost is spectacular and can be viewed from a bridge or on a boat ride. We will make info available when we know if it's a go or not this year.
In central VA, landlord Lance Wood hosts an annual Field Day & Workshop. 2006 will be the 12th year for this event.
In MN, a group of landlords take turns hosting an annual event/open house, etc, with speakers. This year's will be the 4th Annual MN Martinfest.
Besides events, there are martin groups or clubs around the country in both US and Canada. Meeting info may be posted here but is also posted under the Events button on PMCA's main page. We'd like to remind Forum users to check it now and then, and also to post their events there as well as on the Forum. There are programs coming up in IL, TX, and elsewhere as spring arrives/winter leaves.
Sorry to have semi-hijacked your thread but I hope this info is helpful to all
I will let someone else respond to your question about SREH, and you will also find some good background info about them in the FAQs and Archives sections of the Forum.
