For those of us that trap or any newbie trappers I suggest you CHECK you trap EVERY Day! Especially in the heat. One day last year when I got home from work ( I immediately check my trap everyday when I get home from anywhere)(or if I'm gone for long period of time I open the door) there was a great crested Flycatcher in there. EEEGADDSSS!!! he was mad!!! you would of thought I was killing him just opening the cage door. In the heat I also put water inside the trap and have a cover over the top. I don't want anything to suffer.

What would help me is a few posts or links, to read about traps. Whew there is a lot, to consider as a newbee.

docgipe, there are basically 2 styles of traps:

1) Bait traps - you bait the trap and the birds go into the traps. Sparrow traps are used nearly all year long where sparrows feed. A large trap about 6ft x 8ft with a V entrance at the top is called a V trap and it works good expecially in the snow for starlings & sparrows

2) Nest box traps - During the spring, starlings & sparrows are looking for boxes to build a nest. These can be single traps (a single one room trap), traps that you put into a martin house, traps you put into a gourd, or repeating traps that look like a birdhouse. These nest box traps work only during the nesting season

This may be some help to you. If you are interested in trapping sparrows & starlings a certain way, just ask about that trap, and you will get plenty of answers.

Newbe. Please click on the button above, titled "Archives." Once there, you can scroll down aways and find a section titled Traps. There is some information there, plus the plans for a NB Compact trap. That's a really good one during the spring/summer. Also, go to PMCA Shop above, and click on traps. One good one if you have a house, with cavities large enough is the Universal S&S Trap (UST.) I've caught a bunch with the two I have. The Spar-O-Door is also a good one if you have a trio house. Also my NB trap catches quite a few during the spring. CUL Lou

Thanks for your comments. Looks like the NB suits my fancy. Also looks like any child could build one in half an hour. I'll knock out two while making one. Now....off to buy the coffee to get the cans.
