Lake Ponchatrain bridge is being rebuilt into two 3-lane bridges from the old two 2-lane bridges. I saw a photo this morning where one side has been repaired for use. The bridge was severely damaged in hurricane Katrina

Donations from purple martin people helped put up the fence along the old bridge to protect the martins. I guess that means the old has been torn down, I wonder what will happen to the new bridges. Will it have fences?

Emil,

The bridge that the martins utilize and which the fencing was built on is the Causeway bridge. It runs almost due north and south between Kenner on the south shore to Mandeville on the north shore. It was basically undamaged and reopened just a few days after the storm. Hopefully all of the fencing is still intact. We may pass there this weekend and will check it out if at all possible.

The bridge that was so severely damaged was the I- 10 span over the eastern part of the lake that connects New Orleans East to Slidell. I do not know if this bridge ever had any fencing.

Here is a link to a Google map of the lake area. http://maps.google.com/?ll=30.181935,-9 ... 2,0.925598

Thanks, Lane, yes, the martins roosted at the Causeway Bridge, so I am glad that it wasn't badly damaged.
