Hello everyone,
I went to look to buy some PVC plastic pipe for putting around my poles and only found that Home Depot carries only 4 inch pipe! Is this round enough to keep snakes from climbing? Or do I need the 6-7inch PVC plastic pipe? And if so, where do I buy and find it? I need to know as quick as possible to put the poles up this NEW YEAR weekend! Thanks John!

John, I have used 4in pvc pipe as a pole for my bluebird houses for 12 years, I have never had a snake in them, and we have many rat snakes around here. I have even seen them laying under the bluebird houses when I was mowing, but they never got into the house,so I think its safe.

I have heard a report that it will not stop racoons, but the 8in that I use stopped them for 11 years, last year a racoon went up a pole. I would therefore say that very seldom will a racoon go up any pvc pole

To have 1 incident in 12 years, on 10 poles is a fairly good record. I think thats a better record than any pole guard that is normally sold. I am a firm believer in pvc pipe..

Hello Emil,
I was so glad you got on the forum and answered this post because I knew that you used the PVC pipe too! So, I guess the 4inch pipe should do the work! I was kind of frustrated and nervous when I couldn't find it at Home Depot! So I will be putting the 4 inch PVC plastic pipe on the poles this weekend! Thanks Emil! By the way since you did mention the bluebird pole, I have the bluebird house up on a 3 inch PVC pipe and had them fledged babies two times with no snake problems! So I think the 4 inch all to do well on the deluxe gourd rack and the multi-purpose pole too! Thanks again! John! P.S. How do you clean your PVC pipe to keep it slick?

John, I never have cleaned it, but I probably need to, mine is getting dull looking. I may try car polish & a buffer.........

Nothing man made is any worse to get off or more slippy than Silicone. Check with the wife. She may have silicone in a spray can for her oven.

Hey thanks, I like the silicone idea, that sounds easy!
