Second Scout Arrives
Last night a first scout arrived and I raised my martin house. Tonight a second scout arrived along with the first one and they are spending the night in the house. This is the earliest that they have ever come back. Usually I do not get any until around the middle of January.

Is the second one an ASY male? I'm jealous up here in Ark.!

Just an observation...I live in East Charlotte County, not far from Port Charlotte. I have seen alot of swallows around. Usually the scouts I see early don't land, they circle around and make the male martin chirp...it is very evident they want to be noticed. I haven't seen or heard any yet.The Martins usually arrive in the Corkscrew Swamp/Naples/Marco Island area between December 25 and January 1...that is not to dispute the sighting in Port Charlotte...we don't know what happened to the Martins this year with all the weird weather...best of luck to all in the 2006 season!

I live in the Deep Creek area just east of I 75. During the past couple of weeks there have been several large flocks of tree swallows moving through the area. I fledged 80 young last year. This is the earliest that I have got scouts. Last year it was Jan 16 and the year before it was Jan 12th. This morning was foggy and the 2 birds hung around the house until about 10 AM and then took off to go feeding. This time of the year they usually stay away all day and come back to spend the night near sunset.

Great picture! I thought if you'd show a picture on here it would put away anyone's doubts about them being tree swallows.
