I live on the south shore of Oneida Lake in New York. Last Thursday we has a freak East wind which tore the ice up (about 15 miles worth) and piled it along about a mile of shore line. The ice on my lawn is 29 feet high and 120 feet wide. Unfortunately, I dropped my Trio Castle and Musselman houses and attached super gourds down but did not store them in the garage (too many things in the garage). The ice is so thick that there is no sign of my Hobie Cat sailboat, dock hoist, 100 feet of dock or the martin houses/gourds/poles. Good thing the gourds are made of plastic, I'll have those at least from the original colony. The other good part is that I was planning on doubling my housing by putting up a Dual purpose pole for another Musselman and adding an 8 compartment PVC castle with 8 natural gourds. I should be able to offer about the same amount of housing as last year. The attached picture is from about 1/2 mile to the west of me, the ice isn't as high but you get the idea.

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

I am so sorry to hear that, I feel sorry for those of you on the lake. Down here where I live, we have the hurricanes, and you have the ice. Then there are tornadoes in many places, earthquakes in Calif, and blizzards in N. Dak. Is there a good place to live where we are 100$ safe? Probably not.

Best of luck to you, and hope you can recover some of it, especially the sailboat & hoist!

What an amazing picture! How lucky you and others are that your homnes were not closer to the lake. I am sorry for the losses you did suffer, but a dock and some martin housing is eaiser to replace than your home.
PMCA member and Martin fanatic....
2011 A pair of subbies fledged three young but none returned in 2012 :-(
2015 One Pair of subbies came and stayed a few nits but got chased away by Bluebirds and Tree swallows. :-(

I agree, the loss of possessions is but a minor inconvience. I'll take the ioce over a hurricane anyday!!

The earlier photo was from down the lake. The attached shows the ice over my marin houses

Sorry for your losses. That picture is unbelievable - it looks like you will never thaw out. We Texans can't even relate to those weather conditions. Anyway, hope your weather improves.

ps - I only saw one picture - the one of just the ice.
