I know alot about the PM's in my backyard that arrive mid April
and leave by mid August.
Where are the Purple Martins right now December 5, 2005?
Are the PM's still migrating South?
When does the Southern migration end?
Are they all in Brazil or other South American countries as well?
Why do the Martins go to Brazil other then to winter over?
When do the PM's leave Brazil and start to migrate North?
I know the PM's will move North only if flying insets are available.
Once the PM's left my area it was out of sight, out of mind,
however my progression as a landlord is expanding as is my
curiosity.
I'm sure there are others who have been through this progression
and may know the answers.
Have a Great Day

Hey byepass
Is your nick name referring to heart surgery or taking the long way home!
I'm no ornithologist but have tried to read everything I can. Some martins return to Florida in January, but it's a drawn out affair, maybe nature's plan to keep martins dispersed and protect the overall population better from local weather problems. I think they are pretty well scattered now in tropical areas of South America - not just Brazil.
A few martins returned to St. Louis last year in early March, but sub adults not until early May. I have to assume the subs were still in South America in early March. Or maybe they take a byepass!

- Martin Colony History: Tried and tried and had some visitors but...not enough good insects around here to keep them interested.
Most of them are congregating in night-lit public places in Brazil wondering why the same monkey looking creatures that fed them and sheltered them and cupped them harmlessly in their hands 6 months ago are now flailing their arms and waving brooms and shouting at them for simply sitting in the trees with their friends. I think the majority of urban dwelling South Americans who encounter Martins daily feel just like we do about flocks of Starlings up here. I don't know of anyone up here who adores bird crap, and Starlings eat just as many detrimental sod dwelling creatures as Martins eat aerial insects.

I read in one of the updates that in North America we raise as many PMs as possible and in South America they can not stand PMs. Something about their crap burns the paint right off their cars overnight. Oops
Just think every Landlord in North America is responsible for criminal mischief to motor vehicles in South America. Oops
Have a Great Day.
