This bill was introduced today in the Michigan House of Representatives:

Don't worry, I'm on it! So far the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan United Conservation Clubs and Michigan Audubon Society are on our side. This bill will never make it out of committee, if it gets that far. I still have to make more calls, but the bill was only introduced a couple of hours ago.

This is a good example of why everyone should pay attention to what laws your state legislature is working on.

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Thanks, Mark.

I appreciate all your efforts...
Sincerely,

Hmmmm. Something is horribly wrong here. All I got was the header, then it went to Final page. Only about two lines is all. CUL Lou

No problem Lou! I think that's about how much thought went into the proposal. It's only a few lines long. Mark works on Capitol Hill and so is familiar with all of the jargon and proceedings and formalities and what not. I got my ejukayshun about politics from that Saturday morning cartoon thing like "Grammer Rock". Do you remember that one one about the "Bill" that sits on Capitol Hill waiting to signed into a LAW?

Anyway, apparently someone simply didn't like the fact that a law exists that provides for the "killing" of a specifc animal and hopes to "undo" that law. I'm eager for Mark to find out who is backing this attempt and why. I'm willing to bet that there's a 90% chance that someone is trying to make money from the outcome however twisted and perverted it may sound. Imagine this...I get the present law overturned, and then, when the HOSP's and Starlings become so incredibly numerous that the public is outraged, I go before the courts and get a special permit to operate outside the "law" for a fee and then I have a monopoly on flying pest control! Oh, forgot, monopolies are a bad word. Well then I get my wife to use her maiden name and she can "incorporate" her business interests. As long as we keep seperate bank accounts, we can "compete" against each other. There, all is well with the world!

Everything was fixed by the end of the day on Friday. Rep. Beida was trying to get old laws off of the books and didn't know that HOSP were a non-native/invasive species. He thought that repealing the law allowing the killing of HOSP would be a good thing. I just called his office and explained the problem. Then I called the DNR, Michigan Audubon Society and MUCC. More folks called his office and he contacted the committee to ask them to never take the bill into consideration. Go figure! Sometimes it just takes a few phone calls to fix a problem in government. It doesn't always take forever.
