I went on the tree swallow cruise described in an earlier post and took these pictures. The birds were circling around before landing in a stand of phragmites.

Lane (LK), thanks for posting those pictures.

For those who may not remember, Lane recently posted a thread here talking about a Tree Swallow Cruise along the Connecticut River. The cruise is offered by Connecticut River Expeditions in association with the Connecticut River Museum in Essex, Connecticut.

The pictures I have attached below were taken by Lane. They have been "Img" tagged from a non-MSN community page and are veiwable to all.

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Wow!

When the Tree Swallows leave this roost - where do they go? Are there known roosts further south that they use as they migrate? Do they cross the Gulf of Mexico, too?

Amazing site - thanks for the photos!
Sincerely,
Laverne

Laverne, some tree swallows do migrate to Central America, however, some migrate along the Gulf States. Unlike Purple Martins, tree swallows switch to eating berries and seeds to survive cold periods when insects become torpid.

More than likely, when you have viewed these large Purple Martin roost, there have been tree swallows mixed in without you even knowing it.

Sam,
Are you saying that the pictures of the Tree Swallows are really Purple Martins? Years ago, one frosty Fall morning here in upstate NY a very large number of Tree Swallows came across Lake Ontario, or around it, and roosted all night on a black roof...they were packed together so tightly that it must have been cosy for them..they slept in too, didn't leave until around 9. They probably covered an area 20x20'!!

duck, I would think that most of the birds in those photos are tree swallows, however, I would not be surprised if there are some Purple Martins mixed in.
