Migrating martins in Hurricane Rita

I am in central Louisiana with Hurricane Rita approaching and wind gusts around 25 mph so far. It is going to get a LOT worse when the storm comes on shore. I just watched a migrating flock of about 10-12 martins winging it through the gusts of wind. I hope they make it. They are flying directly into the wind from North west headed to south east. I bet they are trying to make it to the Ponchartrain Causeway. I wanted to raise my house for them, but it would be sure to come down in this storm. My heart goes out to them--maybe they will find a good tree.

Joan, My heart goes out to you and the Martins! I would have raised my house...half way at least. It has sustained 60mph wind gusts off Lake Ontario with a little swaying but survived in good shape. It is a T-14 on a round pole. with winch setup. So far so good. Please keep us posted. You all are in our thoughts and prayers!

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Hello all.

The storm has passed --- my home was spared Rita's wrath. As I count my blessings, I pray for all whose lives were changed by the storm.

...and please, don't feel bad about not having your housing raised for the PMs to seek shelter in. I don't know of any who would use the breeding cavities for shelter at this time of the season.

I just hope that as the winds increased - the martins in harm's way were able to escape. I hope the people in harm's way survived and recover quickly. There has been a great deal of money donated to hurricane relief. I'd like to see some serious relief provided to those in need.
Sincerely,
Laverne
