This photo shows a large gray rat snake swallowing a female house finch near my bird feeders at my previous home in Tallahassee, Florida. Rat snakes frequently "hunted" around my feeders, particularly later in the summer. In this case, the finch landed on the snake which was stretched out on a nearby tree limb. The snake quickly coiled around its victim, suffocated her, and then swallowed the prey.
