I am just wondering the length of time left to see birds at this roost. We went for the festival and I would like to go down again? I miss my birds so much; maybe this will help in some small way.

Thanks,

Jayne

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Well, Jayne... I guess nobody knows if the birds are still there or how long they will stay.

The report on Project MartinRoost says it will end approximately late August. If you call the PMCA maybe somebody there could help you confirm if the roost is still active before you make the trip. They might know of someone locally you could call...

Just a thought...
Sincerely,

Hi Jayne--
Sorry, I have not been online much lately and did not see your post until just now. The roost at Manns Harbor is still active, although there are fewer birds--from 10,000-30,000 now. They are too difficult to see at this point, and they are roosting way out on the bridge so you barely know they are there (except for the bodies on the birdge in the mornings and evenings). Our intern left on Aug 26, at that point they were starting to behave differently and may have begun migrating around that time. When you posted this message there would have been enough to warrant a visit--but now it is probably too late.
Please let me hear from you if you are interested in getting involved in our efforts out here. I believe we are on target to begin a non-profit to help promote our protection efforts and continue with public education.
Thanks for coming to the festival! Hope you enjoyed it. Were you on the boat?
Best,

Alissa,

My husband and I were at the festival, we met you briefly while going into the auditorium for the presentation. We even had reservations for the boat. That morning we left Virginia Beach around 9:00; I was feeling very sick, I knew I shouldn't go but couldn't resist. While there i got even sicker and we rode all the way to Manns Harbor, we were there around 4:30 when I just couldn't stay any longer. Believe me, no one could have been more disappointed than I.

I picked up the flyer for donations for the roost protection and sent in my donation, let me know if there is any letter writing I can do or people to contact. I am not able to come down and lend time to physically help but I will do what I can from my desk.

Of course, I intend to try again next year. Thank you for answering me. I was wondering if there is anything in the works for selling products at the next festival, i.e., shirts, drink holders, etc. The funds may be able to help out the effort. I don't know if you can offer anything on this website or not. At one time the PMCA website had articles of clothing but it no longer exists. This may be another vehicle for support for the protection of the roost. I saw the carnage on the bridge and was devastated; I pray something will be able to be done.

We need the state's help, I have written letters but am willing to write more, just let me know what I can do.

Sincerely,

Jayne
