My husband and I visited our first roost site last night and it was absolutley amazing :!: :!:

It is located at the Macon Mall in Macon, GA. There were thousands and thousands of martins pouring into the small oak trees in the parking lot. You can park in the lower level of the Sears near the O'Charley's restaurant.

If you are anywhere near middle Georgia, please try and go! It will be worth the effort, I promise!!

I will try and post some pictures soon. Send me a pm if you have any questions.

I still get goosebumps when I think about it! I was too excited to fall asleep last night even though we didn't get to bed until after midnight. But I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Hello Nicole.

Wasn't it spectacular? As you stand there and watch the thousands and thousands of Purple Martins gathering and swirling, you think, "Surely this must be every Purple Martin in the world! There are so-o many!" And yet, there are hundreds of roosts just like the one you are seeing all over the country. There are a lot of Purple Martins and as landlords we have all helped them reach these numbers.

Can you imagine what Brazil must be like when they all get down there and congregate for their nightly roosts? Awesome!

I'm so happy you found a roost to visit and I am anxiously awaiting your photographs - they are always so beautiful...
Sincerely,
Laverne
