Is it me, or!

Is it me, or did the martins leave early this year? Just when I was realy starting to enjoy all the noise with all the young and adults they left and did not come back. Was it something I said
. They were all gone in July. It just seems a little early to me. I made sure there were no preditors to mess with them. Can someone tell me if this is normal for south Louisiana? Thanks, Ken.

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
I'm in SE Texas - kinda between Galveston and Houston. Every year before this one (going back to 1996) the last family of PMs would leave the week of the 4th of July. This year the last family fledged on 7/19. 7/23 was the last day I saw any PMs on my housing.
The first birds arrived 2/12 - so we enjoyed a longer than normal season. Arrival was on schedule - departure was late. I don't have a clue when winter will be arriving... it's like a box of chocolates; you never know...

They left Central New York early also this year. Perhaps this is because I only had 1 SY pair that successfully nested. For whatever reason I did not get the 4 to 5 pairs of SY pairs this year that typically extend the season to mid August.

I live in Central Virginia and they showed up a little late and left a little early. They usually show up by March 16 and leave sometime around the first 2 weeks of August. I think I had 2 pairs by March 30, and by July 24 or so I think they were all gone. I did see 4 fly over early this morning, and 2 mid-day, but there is a colony down the road from me that they may have nested late and haven't left yet. I keep meaning to go down there and meet the people as they are new, but I haven't done so yet. The previous landlord educated them on the Martins and also comes back once a week to check on them. Now that is a dedicated Martin lover!

At least some of my fledglings and their parents are still spending the night on or in my housing in northern Virginia. They leave early and don't return until just before dark. I am seeing lots of visitors during the day, possibly headed to premigratory roosts.
