- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
Thank Goodness, Nathan!
I didn't want to say anything negative to you yesterday. But, I have found the old belief (that you can put them into any nest and they will feed them) inaccurate. Even fledglings returning to and entering the wrong cavity are at risk of being injured or killed. Purple Martin parents don't like intruders in their nest cavity.
But, your little one made it! The ladder is a good tip we all need to remember! Thanks for sharing that story. I am so happy for you "and" him.
You've got a great looking site there. Best wishes to you for many wonderful seasons in the future. Enjoy...
