Is it a LOT easier for the martins to enter and exit the WDC modified excluders, campared to the crescent SREHs? Or does it take about the same amount of effort?
Thanks
Crescent vs. Modified Excluder

I have crescent and excluder. The birds mastered the excluders faster; One a few birds get the hang (applies to both) of it the rest follow real fast. I am changing my excluders to WDC next season - I had a bird get stuck and die using an excluder this year.
I think that excluders are better in keeping starlings out, I migh be mistaken.

I have added several WDC and excluder II openings by Sandy this spring to my gourds which are 100% crescent type entrances. The early arriving ASY male martins would not enter these nor would any of the early ASY females. Later arriving ASY females took an immediate interest in the WDC's and excluder II's and then attracted male ASY whom with reservations did enter them. With the nest building season complete and the feeding of young it appears that those WDC and excluder II are no different to enter or exit than the crescents. Actually it is very impresive just how fast the ASY males can enter with a dragon fly when feeding the young. I will convert more gourds to WDC or excluder II this winter for next year. I did have 3 female fatalities do to a starling entering the crescent and trapping the females, he was later put to sleep by .177 lead pill while exiting a crescent with difficulty
Sincerely

This is my 60th year providing Purple Martins a Home
I have removed all crescents (half Moons), I also had a scout get hung up and died in an crescent, but luckily I was able to save the PM behind him in the cavity. WDC's are the one's for me till I figure something out better! As far as starlings so far they have not pentrated a store brought WDC sreh at my set up and I got starlings BAD in my area.

HELP! I'm having this issue as well. I have lost one female to wing entrapment in a cresent but we have a HUGE starling problem. WHAT IS A WDC? What is the difference in the excluder II and the original excluder? Thanks guys!
