On Aug. 16th in Nashville Tn today we watched approximately 80,000 Purple martins gather in massive flocks at a special communal site in downtown Nashville. Purple Martins rely almost exclusively on human-provided housing and martin boxes to survive. I have provided housing for these birds for over 30 years. My site is located on Seneca lake in Upstate NY. Purple Martins are natural bug control: They catch and eat many types of flying bugs mid-air. Tonight was an unbelievable evening filming these birds.
