I have a S&K martin house(12 but converted to 6 rooms) with a 6 gourd rack underneath. Three of the gourds have been claimed and nest building has begun. My question is would it be ok to go ahead and close up the entrances to the house. Other birds are trying to build nests in the house. Sorry for so many questions...learning as I go.

I would not permit any other bird to build nest in your Martin houses. Closing off the houses would stop it. I would identify what kind of birds are building in the Martin houses. House sparrows must be eliminated, tree swallows can be redirected by offering housing away from the colony. House sparrows can be shot or trapped but the cannot be given any space near your colony. I am in my third year as a landlord and just today trapped and dispatched two male house sparrows. I had tree swallow pressure early and closed several gourds and offered them bluebird boxes. Once your colony grows you can slowly open back your houses and keep watch who enters newly opened houses. If you love the Martins it is worth the battle. You can achieve 100% occupancy. I hope it goes well for you.

Stan...many thanks. Worked too hard to get my 3 couples to let any sparrows rent a room for free. My husband has taken care of one. Thanks for the advice.

Your welcome. I am learning also and just passing on what I have been taught by fellow landlords. You can also look on the forum and read what other landlords practice. This forum has been very helpful.
