Sub adults arrival

People have had their purple martin scouts arrive over a few weeks now in my area. Sure was hoping to have some in search of a new home for whatever reason. So I guess now I am waiting on subadults. How much time passes after the scouts arrive till the sub adults show up?

The Sub Adults will arrive about 6 weeks after the first ASY’s arrive in your area. Don’t give up on the ASY’s yet though, you still have time to possibly get them also. Keep playing the Dawn Song as much as you possibly can.

Great job playing the Dawn song all day! You can also try the “chatter” it’s available on YouTube.. Sounds like a huge colony. That’s what worked for me when I started.

Also , if you are able to post an areal view of your housing, people will chime in with suggestions.

Also you can go back to the scout arrival maps and look through different years and find out when sub adult reports show up in your area. A lot of people forget to submit the sub adults so the maps are not as accurate but will give you some idea. Also, just because the first rounds of ASY's have arrvied there will still be plenty moving in. You never know, there may still be some ASY's that were displaced or are looking for a new place this year for some reason.

This is my fourth year to try. I have a Martin or two fly by later in March/April. My Dad had Martins for years. I placed the house in same areas where he had success. The house originally had gourds underneath it but I set up a new pole this year and placed gourds there thinking they must not like the area where the house is to change my luck. I don't have an aerial view but here is a picture. Don't have predator guards up yet. Play Dawnsong/chatter from 4 till dark. So frustrating!

Looks like a great location! Hard to tell in the pic how far the gourds are from those tall trees behind it? I’m assuming 40 ft or more?

In the pic it appears that the house is far enough away from the fence to avoid predators I’m assuming?
Since your dad had success there it should be a good location.. Sounds like a gap from when your dad had them and you trying now, so unfortunately you’re starting from scratch again.

Are there other colonies you know of close by?
Sometimes you just have to be patient and I know that’s very hard to do!

Like Flyin-lowe said, you still have plenty of time for ASY’s and SY’s really haven't started yet.

I am thinking the fence might be too close to the martin pole. (fence was not there when my Dad had martin setup) It is 6 feet away from lower part of the pole. That is why I set up the gourds on a new pole in a location which is many feet away from any trees or fences. If I get Martins in the gourds and not house...I will know to move house. Anyway...thank you for your help and advice. Just watching and listening for now. You are appreciated! Thanks Mr. Phil!

No problem Ma’m. That was going to be my suggestion if you have no takers this season. I know it’s kind of a pain, but to move the house out towards the open area away from the fence more. That’s what I would do.
