Only had 1 pair in 2024. 10 fold increase this year compared to 2024. 10 pair this year. Fledged 42 chicks. Hoping for a full house next year. Can't wait. My martins loved the 6 foot perch rods I added on top and the 12 inch perches I added to each unit for a total of 48 feet of perching space. I have power lines in my backyard. My Martins didn't utilize the power lines. The 48 feet of perching space kept them off the power lines and kept them on my gourd rack, which is right where I want them. Love this hobby. Best hobby on Earth in my opinion. Oh by the way, I live in one of the most heavily wooded areas in Texas, if not the most. Tall trees everywhere where I live. It really is possible to have a Martin colony in a forest. I'm surrounded by forest. As long as they have 360 degrees of visibility for 40 to 50 feet, they will give you a chance. They gave me one. I will say this. The more forested your location, the better your housing needs to be. If you live in a treeless area, any ol' martin housing will suffice. If you live in a heavily wooded area like me, you must overcompensate this unfavorable condition with better housing, like Troyers or Chirpies. I'm certain I would not have achieved success with a Tractor Supply S&K Martin house. Many of my neighbors have these S&K houses with no positive results. I'm the first and only success story in my area. Roomy, quality housing and 360 degree visibility for 40-50 feet is always your best ticket for success.
