The neighbors have a new German Shepherd - full sized youngster who loves to bark at the martins and run at them in his yard - 4 foot fence. They have taken to dive bombing him and one day I was sitting with the neighbors when they started up when the dog was right in front of me. What an impressive display of aerobatics. I have no idea what speeds they hit but you can hear them cutting through the wind while they wail at the dog. Really impressive, of course the dog thinks its play...

My MILs Schnauzer chases their shadows around the yard. My MIL loves it bc it wears her pup out!

- Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.
I have an English Sheperd (old fashioned collie) that is amazing at protecting my Martin colony, my Koi Pond, and our chickens. From anything and everything. Especially ariel predators.
The Martins love to bomb her while chasing a frizbee in the yard however. She takes a lot of abuse at fledging time too but it doesn't bother her in the least bit. It's kinda funny.
I wish the Martins would attack starlings and sparrows with the same vigor. lol

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

Yes.. Very entertaining. My German shepherd will get dive bombed, when he’s running playing ball , but only during fledgling time. He doesn’t even notice. .. and they only dive bomb him, not me..
