I lowered my houses last night also ... nasty weather. Raised back up this morning and they didn't seem to notice. i will say I haven't seen any SY PMs yet ... just the ASY here. Also, waiting on some SYs at my father's new PM set up in Northern IL.

Martin Colony History: 2019 - Sighting
2020 - Pair investigating
2021 - Got 2 eggs. HOSPs poked holes in them. Commence HOSP reduction
2022 - Off to a good start, tree swallows took over and Martins left
2023 - Off to a good start, Martin population dwindled and they eventually left
2024 - New standalone pole and gourd rack. 1 nest, 4 eggs, none hatched
2025 - 9 nests, 37 eggs, 23 hatched, 19 fledged!

Glad to hear everything was ok folks.

Our top gourds are close to 14’ high, I lowered them to around 10’. Martins flew around a little and came back. They didn’t seem overly concerned, which is good. We’ve had a consistent 4 birds hanging around, sometimes 5. This morning a new one is hanging around, couldn’t get the colors good in a picture but it seems to have much more brown than the other ones. My uneducated guess is adult female, anyone else have a guess?

Good Morning Wisconsin,

Any updates? Our house site has 2 pair who are building nests and spending the nights. Normally 5 or 6 hanging around during the day. No green leaves activity yet.

Our remote site has visitors when we’re out there, but no serious nest building activity as of yet.

Everyone else?

As of today, i have one ASY pair that just started laying eggs, and 3 male ASY courting the same ASY female. I think I saw a couple SY this morning ... hopefully we can get more to fill in.

That’s great news!

As of yesterday we have 11 eggs. 2 gourds spoken for at our house site and 1 gourd spoken for at our remote site.

Hoping more nest up here, and really hoping this will be our first year to get some hatched out!!

Great NEWS!!!

I have one nest with 5 eggs and another 4 nests without eggs but green leaves coming in. Seems like every day I see more PMs filling in. Hard to count with them coming and going, but by my count I have around 12-16 PMs in morning. I'm thrilled and last year I was only 3 pairs and few visitors.

Great news Folks!

As of this morning we have 6 nests with 26 eggs. 3 nests at our home site and 3 at our remote site. One of the nests got its first egg today, so hoping more to come there.

We’ve only had eggs two other times since we put up housing in 2019, and both times none of them hatched.

Hoping this will finally be the year we contribute to the population!

A lot of activity in the mornings. This morning I counted around 16 martins in the air and several more in or on the 2 houses/gourds. I think I have a large abundance of SY males and ASY males but short on females. As of last Sunday nest check I have 3 nests with 5 eggs in each and another 3-4 nests in process.

Will nest check again on this Saturday. I suspect that the other nests are males without females ... but we shall see. Super excited as this is only the second year with PMs after +40 years of trying off and on without success. No super colony yet, but look to building up the colony size.

That’s great, hoping the best for you SE!

You did have some fledge last year, correct?

Going off the 2nd to last egg theory for the start of incubation, today will be day 15 on two of our nests. So a lot of excitement here! 🙂

Last check we did (2 days ago) there were 8 nests with eggs and 31 eggs total. 1 nest was still getting laid in and there were around 3 nests primed for egg laying. Excited and nervous to see how this all plays out!

That's great ... sounds like both of your colonies are growing. This is turning into a very good year for you. Congrats

Last year I fledged 2 nests of 3 birds. I had a third nest with eggs, but a severe storm tore off the gourd and when I put it back the eggs must have damaged. I know I have 3 nests with eggs at least this year .... interested to see if anymore on my Sunday nest check. I am hoping to grow this to capacity someday which would be 30 pairs.

SE,

How’s your progress looking?

We have 18 out of 37 hatched. Got some pin feathers and eyes are just starting to open. It’s looking like we’re going to have a good number of eggs that don’t hatch, but just happy that some did!
