If your martins are not trained to eat from a platform feeder, the other birds (BB, grackles etc.) will likely wipe out the mealworms etc. If you are going to be trying crickets and mealworms etc. you could drill pretty good sized holes before you have to worry about them falling through.

Hello
My mealworms arrived this mooring By mail
Guys they sure are small Never seen mealworms
So their size i wouldn't know
But theses mealworms i would think they would fall through a 7/32 " hole
Just might use a undrilled pan for them. [ Later Unk

Told you i didn't no what meal worms looked like
Well when i ordered my crickets
My old eyes deceived me
I ordered cricket food
And cricket food cane in the mail this morning
Hear I took the package in the mail for mealworms [ Frown ]
Live and learn as they say
But that lesson cost me $ 15 [ Smile

I get them alive, then freeze them. When the box comes throw the whole thing in the freezer. If you try to open it you will most likely have crickets everywhere. After a couple days I open it and transfer them to one gallon ziplock freezer bags, then back in the freezer they go… Thaw what you are going to use in warm tap water to get to room temp before you feed them. Good luck!

UNK, another option is bee larvae or "bee moths". Go to any local bait shop and they will have them. I have found them to be cheaper than buying crickets. Plus they are not real lively so I just keep them in a fridge and can use them while they are still alive. Plus we use them for fishing bait so I buy them 500 at a time the years I need to feed, and if I don't use them all my son has some bait on hand.

Hi Unk. I’ve never tried scrambled eggs but people have used them for short term. I wouldn’t try starting them on eggs.
As far as mealworms, I use the freeze dried ones in the bag. And frozen / thawed live crickets.
Good luck
Rob

Hi Unk. I’ve never used live mealworms. Hopefully someone who uses them can answer your question.
Good luck
