Two SuperGourd poles (12 gourds on each) at River Point Assisted Living Center.

Seeing the first martin back never ceases to amaze me. He went all the way to South America and flew back to the gourds he nested in last year. About 5pm, I installed half of my gourds then stuck around to see if any would return. I was not disappointed as a single silent male showed up feeding above the site. He entered the gourd at high speed. If they know how to navigate the owl guards, I always think he was here last year.

This will be the 10th year for this colony site. The first 6 years they arrived earlier each year until the 6th year on February 1st. That was the year of the deep freeze, and I lost 8 birds. After that they started a new string of arriving earlier than the prior year until today's January 31st. I hope he survives.

This will be the 53rd year for me hosting a colony.

After 53 years, the number of martins you are responsible for would be an astounding number if you calculate those offspring, and then each their offspring, etc...

Saw my first yesterday, may have already been around just not seeing them while I'm at work, I was literally working on one of my racks when I heard him. He seems to favor the top left apartment of the front of my s&k house, but saw him checking out others. Earliest arrival I've ever had.

Funny, I lady down the street grows gourds and I reached out to her for a few, when she saw me first thing she said was "I was expected someone in their 70s"

All,

Thank you for your kind comments. I think we are all raising martins for future landlords. For instance, almost all of the martins that nested in my colonies were provided by someone who preceded me. We just enjoy them while we are here and pass the offspring on to someone else to enjoy.

Through mentoring, I have met a lot of landlords. All of them were great people. We all belong to a hidden in the backyard fraternity. Maybe we should develop a secret handshake.

Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.

2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.

Excellent post. Yes, it amazes me every year to see it all begin again. The fact that many do this epic round trip year after year is amazing. I had well over 60 young fledges last year, I’m sure less than half make it back here. Truly amazing.

My colony is several miles from my home, so I do not always know what is happening on a daily basis. This evening, I visited to get a count and was surprised to find 7 martins already back.

Sometimes, I believe that area colonies that do not raise their housing until later, have their earliest arrivals roost in my gourds. These birds then leave when their site has been raised. Seven martins seems a little high for February 6th.

With 53 years of experience, you may have something there.
Martins like their own company, why wouldn't they? They sure stop at our place along their migration, then gone.

Down the street from the preserve was a martin house at some small condos. Plastic barn, sparrows, no real management. Anyway this year they they have not put it up. No idea how many years its been up...5 I know of. We have 6 martins at the preserve, perhaps, just perhaps some of these guys are waiting. If they don't put it up, maybe they will stay.

Tom,

If they do not put that house up, I bet you do get their martins. Some of my best years were when a nearby landlord moved and took the martin housing with them. Martins like to be with other martins.
