Really late nesters again this season.

Hi all,
I just checked and again, this season, I have two nests with new eggs, I mean just laid. Here we are in June. If these are successful I am looking at July fledging. Oh boy. And, I already have two other nests with chicks that are late and that was because the eggs from those nests disappeared and the pairs laid again. They are going to fledge at the end of June. Very successful season but like last year on needles and pins because these late nesters can be unpredictable. Let me know if anyone else is experiencing the same. Brent

Hi Brent, looks like I may be with you again this year on the late nests too… lol I had one SY pair last nest check that just started laying, they had one egg… And two nests with 4 eggs… I’ll see on the next nest check if that pair continued laying or were dropping random duds… I saw her nest building some so I’m guessing there will be more eggs this next check.. I have 4 nests that have already fledged but are still here, total mayhem around here, so cool.

Its always tough when that happens, the urge to migrate is so strong. When the chicks get older you may witness the adults leaving for their roost vs stay with them and return during the day. They really try to rush the chicks at that point. Long as food is available (and with the amount of rain LA has been getting) think you will be ok.

Late June to first week of August up here in Virginia on fledging. I have some laying right now and others with 10 day olds. Learned last year it was good for me to have various stages as the first newborns and majority of the crop die off due to weather event but the late 10 pairs continued and produced 36 youngsters instead of a total loss of fledges.

Agree with you. I like them staggered as well however late nests iv got the weather worry...heat and drought. Have four nests at the preserve due to fledge now, be surprised if I see them at the entrances today actually. Other nests are just done laying. But its just like you describe, the early fledges will get off a-ok, so new generations will start even if the rest struggle.

Same here in La.. had a batch of eggs hatch 2 or 3 days ago… end of June earliest.. 1st week of July at latest. Fingers crossed. Just part of the deal I guess.

Same here, I had zero vacancy this year and now I’m seeing eggs in nests that have already fledged. Despite the heat wave last year my late nests made it to fledgling. The weather is cooler this year so my fingers are crossed.

Same here. Thought I was done a month ago, #1
And family left around then and their gourd got taken over by a pair of SY, they added to the nest, had 5 eggs , and oldest chick now about 6 days old??

Eggs in nests that have already fledged?!? Wow- that is interesting- I had no idea they'd do that! I suppose it's a subbie/new pair, and not a re-nest by a pair that already fledged young, or the clutched failed for some reason?

In my case both scenarios Laura, I also have a re-nest happening now, first batch of eggs 1 of 6 eggs fledged and now same male but an SY female laid 3 eggs, 2 hatched yesterday.
