A giant cicada season seems to be near

Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.

2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.

Very interesting article on a once in a lifetime cicada season. Maybe the purple Martins will be gorging gigantic bugs this year -

Perfect storm of bugs, and you can bet all those who eat them will benefit. 4 or 5 will feed a whole brood.

Can Martins take down cicadas? They are rather big bugs... but I imagine Martins can given they are aerial masters. Will be a feats for sure if so.

You know thought of that before replying then remembered martins bringing black witch moths a few years ago after a storm. They were huge, I thought they were bats! Took a few passes before she could see the entrance properly. Cicadas have some hard parts but think if feeding chicks will tear them up.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think they tear things up like other species do. I have not gone back to check my notes but remember years ago finding a dead young one about a week from fledgling with a cicada in its throat.

It may not be a big deal. I now have a few cameras installed and have seen the parents feed the young dragon flies that I was sure they could not swallow. They always managed to swallow them after a while. The cicada indecent was an isolated case and only saw it once. I don't want to alarm everyone to something that nature probably has dealt with long before us.
