My first decade of having martins in NW Arkansas they showed up around March 15 and leave august 1 give or take two days.

Last year they stayed late into mid August.

This year they showed up the first of March two weeks early and then they left by early to mid July. Wondering if something ran them off early? Never seen them leave so early. Are any of y’all having same experience?

I don't have as many years as you- I have 4 years (including this year); but the last 3 they left almost religiously on 8/1-8/3. This year they were gone by 7/22 and I am seeing a lot of transients stopping by on their way heading south.

I have to wonder if the insane cold in the spring and the insane heat in the summer have them confused / other.

We are destroying this planet.

“We are destroying this planet.” MJM, my biggest fear is just that. I wish we could get more people on board to do just the littlest of things to help keep the earth alive. We have too much to lose. The other night I saw a picture of the earth taken from the moon. What a wonder. What a sight. A miracle. Let’s all do our part, as little as it might be, to take care of her. Brent

Who is 'we"? I worked 25 years for one of the largest chemical manufacturing companies in the world. I can say firsthand the USA has done everything possible to reduce emissions of "greenhouse gases" that we have been told cause “Global warming". WE are doing our part! It's the other "developing" countries like CHINA and INDIA that are not reducing greenhouse gas emissions because, as "developing countries", they do not have to comply with the strict regulations US companies must comply with!

I personally don't believe global warming is the cause of above average temperatures or the cause for purple martins to arrive and depart earlier than they did a few years ago. I believe it's cyclical and history proves my point! Eight years ago, there was "snowmageddon" in the northeast US. 15 years ago, while I lived in New Jersey, there was little snow for the 10 years I lived there, but since I've moved to GA, NJ has had record snowfall! As folks said during Covid, follow the science, and you'll learn there have always been up and down temperatures.

It's not the end of the world or why martins come and go at different times in different years. BTW, it was not nearly as hot this spring as it was in 2022.
My martins left this year about the same time they always do, mid-July.
GEAUX TIGERS!

Cheers!

Relax Terry. "We" is me and you. Use reusable cloth grocery bags instead of plastic, don't litter, organic garden if you can...things like that. Take care. Brent

The arrival time of my colony has varied quite a bit over the years. It almost seems like they adjust their arrival dates based on the weather conditions they experienced the prior season. To me it's just birds being birds. Heck, I have Martins still hanging around despite the summer temps. Never seen that before and starting tomorrow we are in August. Other landlords have martins leaving early. One thing I'm not hearing of is an across-the-board trend.

Terry, I worked for the largest chemical company and I can tell you for a fact that the U.S. government could give a hoot about them contaminating our world or its citizens. The EPA is a joke.....it's all about the money.

Wild fires in Canada continue to smoke us out in Ohio and they blame global warming.......and I thought a baby Martin could swallow a lot. Don't look up....the shy is falling

This got political quick lol. But Trent is right in some aspects if you want to fuel the fire. I've got some legitimate history here, so I will share in hopes of driving some positive change.

100% Fact (just look it up): The top 10 most polluted rivers in the world cause 93% of all of the pollution in our oceans. The other 57 rivers represent 7%.

It's not hard to guess where all 10 are. Yangtze, Yellow, Hai, Pearl, Amur, Mekong, Indus and Ganges Delta in China and India, and the Niger and Nile in Africa. The Yangtze alone dumps up to an estimated 1.5 million metric tons of plastic waste into the Yellow Sea per year.

Anyone in business knows that if you want to succeed, you have to go after the low hanging fruit. The US and all other countries represent a 7% share of the waste. You're literality "wasting" your time there while China and India create a cesspool of our oceans with zero regulations and zero concern for the future of this planet.

Political?
Who is Trent?
What is his (assuming Trent identifies as a male) aspects of correctness?
Whose noted "history" is illegitimate?
What is your message that could drive positive change?

Martin departure date is predicated by when the fledglings in the last nest can fly. Once this happens they will usually return to the nest box for four or five nights before the Colony begins its migration south back to Brazil.

In other words they leave as a group.

I have had Martins for 20 years.
Colony started in 2002

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
And where have you been, my darling young one?

I’ve stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I’ve walked and I’ve crawled on six crooked highways
I’ve stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I’ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I’ve been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it
I saw a black branch with blood that kept dripping
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleeding
I saw a white ladder all covered with water
I saw ten-thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children
I heard the sound of a thunder that roared out a warning
I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazing
I heard ten-thousand whispering and nobody listening
I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughing
I heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
I heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
I met a young child beside a dead pony
I met a white man who walked a black dog
I met a young woman, her body was burning
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow
I met one man who was wounded in love
I met another man who was wounded in hatred
I’m a-going back out ’fore the rain starts a-falling

And what will you do now, my blue-eyed son?
And what will you do now, my darling young one?

I’ll walk to the depths of the deepest dark forest
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison
And the executioner’s face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where the souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, where none is the number
And I’ll tell it, and speak it, and think it, and breathe it
And reflect from the mountain so all souls can see it
Then I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinking
But I’ll know my song well before I start singing

And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain’s a-going to fall - Dylan - and a favorite poem.

One on one we are so kind to one another but put us in groups and suddenly or often we can become ignorant, defensive, and mean-spirited - (George Carlin)...The older I get the more I enjoy solitude and reflection...I agree with Brent in all one can do is be self-responsible...others actions and thinking's are beyond control but still can be influenced with facts and love. I don't think we can actually save Earth but the satisfaction of doing an act that nurtures it's life giving resources and helps sustain them longer for her and us, somehow connects us or grounds us to this entity and offers a special feeling of satisfaction and a belonging with it.... I look forward to retreating further into the forest and natures wide hugs. I hope the Martins are swarming in mass and feeding for their amazing journey ahead...imagine the excitement of the HY's (if they have such a thing)...The Natural world is amazing and occasionally we are too, it's why each of us are landlords and why taking another step for Earth should be so easy. Honey bee hives is the next project I'm being pulled towards.

I'm just a wandering on the face of this earth
Meeting so many people
Who are trying to be free
And while I'm traveling I hear so many words
Language barriers broken
Now we've found the key

And if you want the wind of change
To blow about you
And you're the only other person to know, don't tell me
I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band.

A thousand pictures can be drawn from one word
Only who is the artist
We got to agree
A thousand miles can lead so many ways
Just to know who is driving
What a help it would be

So if you want this world of yours
To turn about you
And you can see exactly what to do
Please tell me

I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band.

How can we understand
Riots by the people for the people
Who are only destroying themselves
And when you see a frightened
Person who is frightened by the
People who are scorching this earth.
Scorching this earth

Moody Blues

Relax Mr. Jones and no need for a mean spirited opening line.....It always seems the most bellicose people preach endlessly about harmony. I recently read a post here that a landlord lost many baby martins because of a business trip for money. And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain’s a-going to fall.......and it did.
Some like to hear their own thoughts and some like to hear all thoughts...I'm the later. My next project is not to gloat but share wisdom with others for a better understanding but as you see by my last post, answers are hard to come by.

Imitation is to flattery as they say. Thanks for the reference on the opening line and your insights... I corrected the first sentence with the Carlin reference i left out unintentionaly..hopefully it makes it read differently now(intent was focusing on individualism for change)...I like that word Bellicose...thank you again... Moody Blues are awesome!

Last quote for the season but read it early today and seems fitting after our Moody Blues and Dylan references...

Imitation is to flattery as they say.

That and three bucks will get you a bowl of soup.

Story time........I met with a group upper management sent to our site to curb my reporting of law breaking exposers at our plant. The air conditioners in the meeting room were downwind from the production. They sat there drinking water, snacking and lying about all the testing and improvement they did for my fellow union brothers and sisters. I told them about the EPA's allowable exposure rates for Hexavalent Chrome and pointed out they may have reached the limit of exposure. They looked puzzled as I drew their attention to the vents above them. The air conditioning units suck air through a filter on the roof and the discharge vents were directly above their heads......and black chrome dust was easily seen everywhere. That was the end of the meeting.........they looked like a group of 6 year olds in a haunted house.

The EPA officer wouldn't even enter the production area to monitor air sampling tests. The company would have there favs stay out of production areas, while wearing the monitors, to pass the requirement standards. I asked him why he would not insure a proper test and he told me.....I know what that sh*t does to the human body and you'll never see me enter. We blew crap into the air, into the river, into the neighborhood, tracked into the employees cars, homes and where your babies crawl.

Now if these global warming big shots believed the world will end in 10 years....like my nice EPA office believed.........ya think they would quit flying private jets around the world and bulldoze 90% of the their home(s)?

The EPA officer told me flat out....Docs and other experts write recommendations about all of the hazards of a certain chemical and by the time it goes through all the channels of government to become a EPA standard....it looks nothing like the original recommendation.

These are fact and I have photos and ages of the workers who passed during my short 10 years. So eat your bugs and give your hugs but don't push your global warning fears without the stomach to hear a rebuttal

Your statements and wording in your limited post has certainly defined who you are in here. Good luck with all that and hope you find your happiness in it.

I know who I am but always grateful to receive good wishes so, thank you. Your posts have also exposed your need to do many great things. I tried being nice you childish little punk in my last 3 reply's but to no avail as I see it's not possible for your type. Narcissist's like yourself are all the same...insecure and scared of something lacking in their life and act the tough guy but are always the coward in the end. The hard rain did fall on you and your friends/coworkers tough guy at your chemical facility that spreads death...looks like nature took care of the problem for those 10 that buy into chemicals, perhaps you have some of it growing in you now and you'll feel some more of that hard rain that falls on your types. If you wanna bring it, try bringing something other than personal insults and digs or jabs in your underlying childish 3 post to me. I'd soon as break that glass jaw of yours but those days are mostly gone for me now but I could make an exception for a punk like you... I should have known growing up in the south what happens when you wallow with pigs...you get crap all over yourself...I think I'll leave your worthless butt in the crap to wallow by yourself. Go take a deep inhale and wallow with some of those chemicals you defend...I'll keep to the bugs, hugs, and wildflowers you little coward.
