Started out using styro from a pool floaty but I had a starling pull some out last year. This year I moved to blue painters tape over all openings while I get rid of HOSP's and any Starlings that show up. Curious to hear what others use. Oh I do have a few plastic SK clips for the crescent openings but I only have a dozen of those. What have you found to be most effective and ease to keep unwanted guest out while waiting?

i have troyer horizontals and i use a piece of aluminum flashing cut from a roll and just fold the ends so it slides down the flat face of the tunnel entrance. cheap, fast, easy and pretty secure.

I use nothing. I let the birds move in all they want. It makes it easier to destroy them before the martins arrive. They are eliminated within a day or two. Now there's no birds left to move in. It's a nice problem to have.

Martin Colony History: Martin landlord since 2016. 48 super gourds all with crescent openings and porches.

I have used tape but now I use plastic snap in doors for my super gourds. They snap in and easy to remove. Work great...

I use a Van Ert trap on a separate pole in the middle of my gourd racks.
Starling will go to a couple of gourds but eventually will wander into the trap, for some reason they are drawn to it.
I have 10 martins so far but If a starling shows up they will let him have the gourd they know he won’t be around long. There aren’t paired up yet and there is nothing to defend or protect early in the season.
