When to put up snake traps.
That's too bad Snake Away doesn't work. I did the netting the year before and it caught a Cardinal and another corn snake, who was getting strangled to death. I took him and all his tangles to our local wildlife hospital to be saved and picked him up after surgery to relocate him. I don't want to catch anything else, but just deter them, so I wont be putting up bird netting. This was also suggested to not use bird netting by Busch's Wildlife since it does trap and kill beneficial predators in our wildlife, that's why I went with the weed barrier this past year instead.

I have netting up now but plan on buying the solar charger at the end of this month. I’m just not electrical minded but I’ve learned so much not having experience before. I like the idea of not having to deal with the netting and that it would deter not only snakes but other ground predators. My neighbor had solar charged fencing around his garden to keep rabbits out and it worked for him. I’ll get him to help out. There are some YouTube videos on it and some of our members use electrical chargers. I think it’s a great idea. I tried to use rabbit repellent once and, well, it didn’t work. Never tried snake repellent. Good luck. Brent

Hi Brent
I live in central Texas and we used to get rat snakes constantly stuck in the netting. So we decided to put 5’ of pvc pipe on all our poles never had a problem with any ground predator after that. Works great!
Good luck this season!

Hi Sandy. The 5’ pvc pipe is a pole guard? So you didn’t use electrical deterrent at all? I have pole guards but I know that snakes can breach them. Let me know if that is what you did. What is the diameter of the pipe? Thanks, Brent

Following this also. Sandy, are you able to attach a picture of what you did with the 5' PVC around the pole? The sounds like a possible option for me as well, since I don't feel comfortable messing with electricity.
Thanks,
Susan

Hi Brent
When we put in a pole we put the pvc over the bottom pole section 5’, 6” pvc before we add the 2nd section of the pole. You will have to put the rope cleat or cable above the pvc for lowering. We have the 2” square pole 16 unit gourd rack. There will be some extra space between the pole and pvc I just stuff some snake netting in that space keeps the fledgings from falling between the pole and pvc.
Hope this helps.

Hi Sandy. That’s interesting in that it would seem that a snake can crawl up the 5’ PVC and then once up the 5’ could simply continue up the pole that is holding your gourds. Since you’ve done this you have not had any snakes? Wow. I was thinking about how to catch a snake with a trap similar to that of a rabbit trap (the rabbit crawls in and trips the trap) but haven’t been able to fully come up with an idea. It would be interesting to have such a device. Brent

Hi Tom. I would like to see how you set up your electric predator guard. If
you could send pictures I’d appreciate it. I’m going to be ordering the
solar charger and maybe check tractor supply to see if they have one. But I
am curious on your set up. Any thing would help. Before I do any thing I
need to understand the set up. Thanks, Brent PS I sent this to your e-mail as well.
