Finding licensed bander in sW Ohio

This year my colony fledged just under 400 birds. I plan to add an additional pole next year and expect that number will increase. Since attending the online conference, I am considering banding my birds next yer. I use Troyer horizontals so it would be possible to band fledglings and adults for a total of 600+ birds. How could i find an experienced licensed bander to come to my colony for that?

Whoa!!! I cannot imagine how fun your colony is with 400 young. My goodness nest checks must be chaos. To your question, I believe banders must be permitted by the US Fish and Wildlife service. Maybe it's worth a call to the Ohio DNR, or to PMCA? Not sure if the PMCA has volunteers or interns that would travel to band at such a large site, but it's worth an ask. I have called them a couple of times with various questions and they are super helpful

Spoke with bander about becoming a federal bird bander. It takes a lot of training and work. Once you become a bander then everyone else will want you to come band their birds and you will spend less time at your own colony enjoying your birds. Not saying that it wouldn't have its rewards just throwing a little caution into the wind.
