Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

They generally lay eggs in the morning hours. Nest checks are best done in the afternoon to early evening hours while they are usually out feeding.

As long as you don't do it in the morning during egg laying, any other time is fine. Sometimes I have to do them while all the martins are still around and they get noisy at first but they usually fly around for a minute and then land on the furthest house from the one I am looking at. I have just under 70 cavities so it takes a little time. Back when I only had 5-10 with martins in them I could do them quick enough the martins would just buzz around until I was done. Almost every time I do nest checks there is a female or two who stays in their house. I haven't done full next checks yet this year but yesterday I opened my T14 into insert a trap and one of the females stayed in the entire time.
