I was dealing with HOSP on that side but these birds have chased them away. Problem is they have attempted to chase my martins.

Any ideas what I should do?

Since it’s late in the season I was thinking about closing all the holes but where the Martin pair reside. Concerned these guys might get nest revenge.

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

It looks like a male Blue Bird.

Eastern Bluebird, this is the male in your photo. Put up a single nestbox for them nearby. Since your martins have site fidelity, the bluebirds might fuss at them but will not be able to harm or evict them. Bluebirds are native songbirds, protected same as martins, so you cannot trap them, remove nest, etc, once it has eggs. You could pull out bluebird nest and put in the nestbox you put up for them.

Thanks Louise I was thinking that’s what it was. So relieved to hear the martins are safe!

I’ll get a box ASAP

Martin Colony History: 2016 6/1 Pole put up late due to HOA . Had visitor birds but no pairs that stayed.
2017 3/1 visitor birds but no pairs that stayed.
2018 3/1 visitor birds but no pairs that stayed.
2019 3/1 visitor birds but no pairs that stayed. Brothers Martins didn’t show up at all at his pole 10 miles away.
2020 7/30 Had 3 pairs, 1st- 5 eggs/ 2nd hatched 2 fledged, 2nd - 5 eggs/ 2-5 hatched fledging. 3rd formed late July and no nest built.
2021 3/1 no pairs returned. One lone male hung out few days then left. Weather was bad.
2022 6/1 one pair all four eggs that hatched fledged. I’ve had 6-8 visitors.
2023 6/15 Eleven pairs 4-6 babies per nest. 51 babies total hatched. Will start fledging July 4th until end of July. I am in total shock.....Wow

Bluebird for sure. If he does pair up and they get eggs(hopefully in a gourd) you can move the gourd along a rope a foot or more each day and when far enough out gourd in a bluebird pole. I have done this past two years and had bluebird babies each year and they didn’t bother martins. Bluebirds do like to perch away from their nest and watch to keep other males away so don’t be surprised if they watch their gourd from the taller Martin pole.

Thomabear yes, they are delightful to have. I have a pair that just fledged 5 chicks. I bought a nest box from Walmart in Raceland. They love it. Avoid using pesticides. These birds eat ground insects. Backyard bird enthusiasts love them. Cavity nest builders. Beautiful birds. Put up a box. Brent
