I was thinking today about some of the old timers on this forum. One that crossed my mind was Emil Pampell. For those of you who have been around for a while know him from the forum. After a quick internet search I found he passed away late last year. I used the forum search feature and didn't see anything brought up about him recently so I thought some of you would like to know. I do not use facebook so I am not sure if this was brought up on the facebook page either.
Emil was one of the good ones..........
Forgive me if this has already been brought up......

- Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.
2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)
2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.
2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged
2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(
2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.
2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.
Darn.. yes I remember him. I hope someone picked up his hobby and is continuing on with his colony.
If you have a link to his obituary, please post it.

Respectfully read his obituary. What a wonderful person. What did he develop as predator protection? He definitely would be the neighbor I'd love to have. Many of his generation valued gardening, birding and the environment. Great that this was shared. Thanks. Brent

- Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.
Emil sure earned my respect. The kind of person I wish I knew personally. We shared many strings on this forum. He helped me quite a bit.
My thought and prayers to all those that knew and loved him.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

I found this piece from him. He discusses at length, have to do a search for his posts. From Emil:
I Never tried putting the sideboards on the inside, even though it should work.
The SIMPLE idea behind this method is to make the entrance thicker so the starling cannot turn sideways and get his back inside the entrance. The starling must be forced to go straight in which it cannot do. (EXAMPLE: (if you could make the entrance 1 inch thick, it would have the same effect as sideboards)
I used 1/2inch sintra sideboards. I think that the 1/2in would be more caulking surface and would hold better (than 1/8in surface). What I meant is that any thickness would be ok if you can fasten it good.
I do not know if 1/2 in thick entrance would be thick enough, I have not tried it, but I know that 1 inch deep entrance will work
In answering your first question, yes, you have it right. However, I did not try going straight to a gourd with the sideboards, I attached them to the floor of the porch and the SREH entrance.
Another great advantage to this method is that it completely stops wing entrapment
A good house sparrow is a dead house sparrow.

Interesting. Before the season I added Wing Entrapment Protectors to my houses. I attached them to the outside of the entrances. The houses came with them attached inside but they were not thick enough. Of course I was worried that the martins would have a difficult time entering but the martins had no problem and so far, no wing entrapment. Thanks for the post. Brent

He was a great person. He posted in a lot of my threads and answered a lot of my questions. So experienced, and straight answers.
