SueK, Since this was posted in 2017 I have not had any problems with stuck birds in the inside holes. Iused a 2 inch knockout punch. I punched two holes side by side making approximately a 2 x 31/2 inch egg shape hole in each inner wall. It's very easy to do. You might know somebody that has one. I think Harbor Freight carries punches but are a little expensive. A hole saw might work but probably difficult getting into the space and square with the wall. Make sure to deburr the hole so birds don't get cut.

I realize I may do things the hard way sometimes but realizing this was a one-time thing, we just removed the center wall and made this hole large and high enough to round bottom edge around the wire rod.
took picture from nest cavity side. Didn't take chance on wing entrapment and kept hole high enough to contain nest and eggs.

You will need to put some pressure on it for the 3" saw to cut through the metal. If you have the house apart, put it on top of a piece of would to support it as you drill through.

TY- you might be pleased to know, Harbor Freight sells a right angle drill attachment, which I bought. Attached that to the drill, then attached a 3" hole saw with a center bit. Used a tiny bit to start the hole, advanced from there. Missed two compartments I should've drilled, oh well- next year. No SREH doors on them until then.
