Wow ! I was shocked to see my first ASY scout this morning here in central Iowa. I was preapred to open them this week sometime, but when I saw him come in this morning I went ahead and opened up the housing. They were 80 miles south of me yesterday and now they are here.

Thanks Tim for the good words. My single ASY male is eating crickets inside compartment #51. This summer I would like to come down to Purple Martin Lake and do some bird watching with you. Best of luck this season.

- Martin Colony History: I have had my martin colony on the dam of one of my ponds for nine years. The colony has grown each year, but I am now concentrating on helping friends and acquaintances who have shown interests in martins. My colony consists of three T-14's with 8 Troyer gourds attatched to each T-14, a Troyer gourd rack with 12 gourds, and another gourd rack with 18 Troyer gourds for a total of 96 nest cavities. I am having serious predation issues with hawks and owls and am experimenting with various hawk guards and "screens". Established successful supplemental feeding the last few seasons and have had a blast flipping mostly meal worms and some crickets. Faculty from Ohio University are using my colony as a research site to study parasites that target cavity nesting birds. In exchange for access to my bird trail nest boxes and martin housing, they are banding all birds involved in their study.

Glad to hear that Iowa birds are starting to get to you. I hope the weather gives you a break, and things will warm up. Here in southeastern Ohio, I am getting nervous. Late arrival for my main colony is after the 25th. I had one ASY male bird that was one of my birds land in the colony on the 20th. He was one of my birds for sure. He was banded, and he also caught the first meal worm that I flipped to him, so I am sure he was one of mine. The bad news is I went to NCAA basketball games over in Indianapolis and when I got home my lone bird was no where to be seen. I am starting to worry that possibly some Ohio birds might have gotten caught up along the gulf coast of Texas or Louisiana during that terrible killer weather in February. My wife tells me that I worry too much. Hopefully things will change in the next few days.

I heard about the terrible weather down south. It has been rainy and cold here in central Iowa for the arrival of my lone ASY male. No others have arrived, but I expect that they will be sure to show up soon. I have been feeding him crickets, like I do every year at the beginning of the season and he is readily eating.
