- Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.

About 3 years ago a fellow in Texas was moving and offered to anyone a beautiful T14 house out of EPS rigid foamboard. It was glued together with compatible adhesives and painted to protect it from UV degradation. He stated it was very well accepted by purple martins. It proved very effective against early spring cold snaps and was vented for Texas heat with round plastic vents. It was the best of all worlds in his opinion. I do not know if anyone eventually got and used it.
As long as squirrels cannot get to and chew holes in the EPS, then an EPS foamboard house would be ideal. It could be painted with EPS compatible paint to prevent UV deterioration. As long as the EPS is protected from UV it does not rot. I have dug up pieces of EPS foamboard that were trash left buried in the dirt from house construction. It has been exposed to moisture and dirt for 15+ years and looks as good as new.
Extruded polystyrene foamboard would be significantly lighter than any wood or composite material.

If your talking about Expanded PVC foam board.
Comes in thicknesses from 1/8" up to 2".
I've used 1/4" thick as a skin over a plywood frame.

Some guy speaking.
I used 3/4" pink foam board for the walls and room dividers and 1 1/2" white styrofoam for the floors and roof. They specify an adhesive but I used Liquid Nails and it worked fine. I also am going to cover the outside with aluminum.

Expanded PVC Sheet and Extruded Polystyrene Foamboard are not the same thing. I need to study and examine Expanded PVC Sheet so I am better informed about Expanded PVC Sheet.
I know about HDPE (high density polyethylene). That is not the same as either of the above products.
