- Martin Colony History: I have had my martin colony on the dam of one of my ponds for nine years. The colony has grown each year, but I am now concentrating on helping friends and acquaintances who have shown interests in martins. My colony consists of three T-14's with 8 Troyer gourds attatched to each T-14, a Troyer gourd rack with 12 gourds, and another gourd rack with 18 Troyer gourds for a total of 96 nest cavities. I am having serious predation issues with hawks and owls and am experimenting with various hawk guards and "screens". Established successful supplemental feeding the last few seasons and have had a blast flipping mostly meal worms and some crickets. Faculty from Ohio University are using my colony as a research site to study parasites that target cavity nesting birds. In exchange for access to my bird trail nest boxes and martin housing, they are banding all birds involved in their study.
Supplemental feeding is the best chance you have to save your birds. Learn how to flip meal worms and crickets to your distressed birds and you can save some of them. You can get meal worms and crickets on line in bulk. The more you buy, the lower the price. It can sometimes take time to "teach" the birds what you are up to, and it can take lots of flying meal worms and crickets before they catch on!
Give it a try! Save those martins!! Us Yankees up here in Ohio are pulling hard for you to be successful!! Don't give up!!
There is nothing worse than finding dead birds in your colony.
Do all that you can to save your birds!
Good Luck! hang in there!

- Martin Colony History: -Wife's family martin house shore Lake Ontario since 1967-colonized annually.
-2017 martin house taken over by starlings.
-2018 did research and purchased new martin house -Lonestar Alamo aluminum 14 compartment with perching rods and nest trays.
-2019 opened new martin house but frustrating season long battle with wily HOSPs (see posts) and martin visitors but no settlers.
-2020 Covid-19-honored request of locals that seasonal home owners stay away and only reached summer home too late to attempt to start colony.
-2021 HOSPs again. Shot 2 with borrowed air rifle. Purchased pellet air rifle with scope. Frequent visitors with a pair staying couple of nights but then leaving. Will try again 2022.
We are in Canada, and our seasonal home is on the northeastern shore of Lake Ontario. The purple martins traditionally reach us April 8-15. Over the last couple of decades their numbers, sadly, have been gradually declining. Upon hearing of the extreme cold in Texas and some parts of the southern US we have been concerned regarding how many martins will die on their way up here and the extent to which this weather will further reduce our martin population this year.
We plan to do our best to support those that do succeed in reaching us and allow as many as possible to head south in mid August after the breeding season.
Meanwhile, good luck to you down there, in your efforts to support your colonies.
