Martin Colony History: 2014 - first year, zero activity
2015 - Nothing
2016 - SY male visited and stayed a few weeks, unable to attract a mate
2017 - SY pair arrived June 6 - 3 eggs laid, 2 hatched, 1 fledged.
2018 - ASY male, SY female - 5 eggs, 5 hatched, lost all 5 prematurely
2019 - SY male hungout for a month, no mate, several visitors
2020 - SY Pair - 4 eggs, 4 fledged
2021 - ASY male returned 4/26

My season that is....

Are there still SY's moving north in MN? I had a male SY stick around for about 10 days (dubbed Marty Jr. by my kids). He was very protective of the setup, stayed each night, and even brought some visitors. Haven't seen him the past couple of days so think he may have given up on finding a mate and moved on. :-( We are suffering from dawn song fatigue and starting to feel pretty bummed.

Do I have hope for this year, or do I need to start thinking of 2021?

Martin Colony History: Visitors are rare. On the northern edge of the martins range.

If he was locked into your housing you may have a chance for him next year. The good thing about being late in the season for you is that if your SY took off it's better late in the season as the odds he's shacked up elsewhere are more slim in June.

So it was only 10 days, but he may just be floating around colonies for the rest of the year and there's a chance he comes back to you next year.

Hard to say, but this year sounds like it was late across the board. Still a bit of time for you being this far north I'm thinking.

Martin Colony History: 2019- Several large groups stopped and visited.
2020- 2 pair seemed interested but left after 2 weeks, daily visits since first week of June from neighboring birds.
2021- First pair nested, 4 eggs. Unfortunately 0 fledged. Constant attacks by SY males caused nesting female to crash into privacy fence and she didn't survive.

The SY birds just started showing up at my place in the last 2 weeks. I would think your area would be similar as I am just off of I-90 as well.
