These two have been hanging by our place the last few days. Are they a pair or two sub adult males?

- Martin Colony History: 2016 6/1 Pole put up late due to HOA . Had visitor birds but no pairs that stayed.
2017 3/1 visitor birds but no pairs that stayed.
2018 3/1 visitor birds but no pairs that stayed.
2019 3/1 visitor birds but no pairs that stayed. Brothers Martins didn’t show up at all at his pole 10 miles away.
2020 7/30 Had 3 pairs, 1st- 5 eggs/ 2nd hatched 2 fledged, 2nd - 5 eggs/ 2-5 hatched fledging. 3rd formed late July and no nest built.
2021 3/1 no pairs returned. One lone male hung out few days then left. Weather was bad.
2022 6/1 one pair all four eggs that hatched fledged. I’ve had 6-8 visitors.
2023 6/15 Eleven pairs 4-6 babies per nest. 51 babies total hatched. Will start fledging July 4th until end of July. I am in total shock.....Wow
Looks like two sub adult males to me. Though if any of them are a female I would say the one on the right. My females have a slight brownish color to them and the males have those dark spots on chest and have the blueish purple head colors. My females are less dark on the head and neck. If you see them singing and doing the clicking sound then it is a male. I havent seen any of my females doing the clicking calls. I could be wrong so wait for a more exp person to chime in.

The one on the right looks to be a female.

To the person who said the one on the right is a female, I think I love you. Do you know what waiting ten years is like?

Have you seen any behaviors like they are there in the mornings and then are gone most of the day and return before sunset? Do you see one sitting on the porch and singing to get the other to fly down and perch? Are they sleeping in the gourd? The one on the right could very well be female and the dark spot/line could be the brood patch that females use to warm the eggs. It tends to look like a line sometimes. I would say that if they are still together day after day its is probably a pair. If you see nest building then you know for sure. My females did most of their nest building in the mornings and a few minuted before sunset. I gathered up hay and small dead grass and spread it around the pole so they didn't have to go far. The female tends to do most of the nest building and the male keeps watch but the males help sometimes. So, keep watch out for those things. I would say it looks promising though. Still plenty of time for a pair to lay eggs.

They stay around most of the day. If I want to see them, usually if I walk out by the housing, they come flying back. Today I had three and sometimes four martins flying around.

Wow, you have done well! I had some tough luck but I am still hanging in there. Three spent the night last night and I often see four here. I am very happy and thankful.
